The Master’s Degree in Distance Education Management is a program designed to the academically train masters to lead and manage processes, projects, and academic programs under the virtual mode both in educational institutions and in organizations.
The academic program allows participants to acquire, adapt, and develop knowledge aimed at solving problems related to distance education management under disciplinary, interdisciplinary, and professional perspectives.
The Master’s Degree in Distance Education Management broadens the understanding of various distance education challenges under a comprehensive, holistic approach with the purpose of managing aspects related to material design, user assistance, technology infrastructure, management structure, virtual platform analysis, and other factors and components associated with distance education and its management.

The Master’s Degree in Distance Education Management is developed under the online methodology, which is, in turn, framed under the Educational Model of Universidad EAN. It involves autonomous work and technology support through virtual classrooms.
In order to put new energy into the academic process, the online methodology establishes a student-teacher relationship mediated through the use of information and communication technologies.
This methodology emphasizes on autonomous learning and enables students to lead their learning process. Similarly, it encourages them to make most decisions on their academic process, adapt study schedules to their time availability, and decide when, where and with whom to study.
Students under this methodology can interact with their peers and teachers by using virtual environments that have been designed by experts in order to make the learning process easier regardless of their location and their time available to study.
Academically train masters able to lead and manage distance education related programs and projects by considering educational, technological, and managerial elements, and by meeting user needs and media and mediation characteristics.

Academic program taught in Spanish. Online academic activities do not require classattendance.
After having completed the academic process, the Master in Distance Education Management majored from Universidad EAN will have the following competencies:
- Effectively manage distance education processes considering user characteristics and capabilities and technology resources available.
- Lead and manage teaching innovations to design learning resources and environments aimed at contributing to the development of competencies of distance education participants.
- Manage organizations and units responsible for the administration of distance education programs both in educational institutions and in business organizations.
- Promote autonomous learning processes based on the potential of information and communication technologies in order to structure virtual environments.
- Act ethically and with social responsibility towards various social, cultural, economic, and political realities.
- Develop sustainable business opportunities and lead innovative projects aimed at generating economic and social value.
- Propose research projects aimed at meeting their interests and covering subject units addressed in the Master’s Degree.
Core Study Units (27 Credits)
The core study units correspond to 27 credits distributed in the following study units (nine three-credit study units): Learning Management Models and Systems, Strategies for Academic Training in Virtual Environments, Development of Management Competencies and Senior Management Models, Online Curricular Project Management, Management of Technology Resources to Design Online Courses, Distance Education Consultancy, Design and Management of Virtual Learning Environments, Management of Online Academic Training Mediations, and Foresight and Trends in Distance Education. Each study unit is described in the paragraphs below.
- Learning Management Models and Systems (3 Credits)
This study unit allows master’s degree students to analyze and assess various learning management models and systems in order to choose the one most appropriately adapting to the circumstances of application environments and user conditions.
- Strategies for Academic Training in Virtual Environments (3 Credits)
This study unit develops competencies to identify, analyze, and assess various existing strategies aimed at promoting and facilitating learning processes in virtual environments. It also allows to know and understand the scope of each strategy, its opportunities and limitations, and its functionality in various locations.
- Development of Management Competencies and Senior Management Models (3 Credits)
The purpose of this study unit is to manage applications and managerial skills and models of distance education under a strategic perspective in order to encourage its effective senior management and so ensure the strategic leadership of distance education processes.
- Online Curricular Project Management (3 Credits)
This study unit contributes to effectively manage curricular projects and develop competencies to undertake distance education related initiatives aimed at meeting conditions of institutions and environment and user characteristics.
- Management of Technology Resources to Design Online Courses (3 Credits)
This study unit develops competencies that allow students to identify, analyze, and assess technology resources available. Consequently, they will be able to choose the most suitable ones in order to meet challenges of distance education processes.
- Distance Education Consultancy (3 Credits)
This study unit provides theoretical principles and conceptual foundations to undertake intervention processes and initiatives in organizations engaged in distance education. It also generates actions that allow optimizing distance education processes in companies and educational institutions.
- Design and Management of Virtual Learning Environments (3 Credits)
This study unit allows students to develop competencies in order to determine the elements necessary in managing virtual learning environments, all indicators facilitating their management, and strategies favoring their effective management. It also allows the development of competencies to manage these learning environments under a strategic perspective.
- Management of Online Academic Training Mediations (3 Credits)
This study unit develops competencies to identify, analyze, and assess various media and mediations favoring distance education learning processes, and their opportunities and limitations. This is developed for distance education managers to be able to select those responding to the circumstances of the distance education proposal subject to application.
- Foresight and Trends in Distance Education (3 Credits)
This study unit is addressed for students to understand limitations and opportunities of foresight analysis methods in order to use them in decision-making processes and so facilitate the adaptation of organizations to changing circumstances in competitive environments. Consequently, it allows students to undertake transformation actions by taking advantage of distance education trends and the foresight of distance education and technologies supporting it.
Cross-Curricular Study Units (16 Credits)
The cross-curricular study units promote the development of cross-curricular competencies in postgraduate academic programs at Universidad EAN. Managerial competencies, entrepreneurial competencies, and research competencies -under an applied research perspective- are some of the most representative cross-curricular competencies. They are developed by professionals enrolled at the various master’s degrees offered by the University. The Master’s Degree in Distance Education Management is comprised by three cross-curricular study units. Each one corresponds to three (3) credits, that is, nine (9) credits.There are two additional study units comprising seven (7) credits: Research Seminar (3 credits) and Final Major Project (4 credits), that is, seven (7) credits. This set of study units is comprised by sixteen (16) cross-curricular credits.
The cross-curricular study units are as follows: Strategic Thinking and Global Management, Business and Development Initiative, Business Ethics and Sustainability, Research Seminar, and Final Major Project.
- Strategic Thinking and Global Management (3 Credits)
In this study unit, students will develop management competencies related to communication, planning and management, teamwork, strategic action, globalization, and human talent management. Consequently, topics such as systems thinking, competitive strategy, strategic analysis models, analysis of resources and abilities, creation of sustainable competitive advantages, globalization and competitiveness, and strategic thinking development are addressed in this study unit.
- Business and Development Initiative (3 Credits)
This study unit is focused on developing entrepreneurial competencies related to the identification and use of project and business opportunities that generate social and organizational impact, thus implementing them with high achievement orientation, innovation, vision, autonomy, and context sensitivity. Consequently, aspects such as business opportunities and business models, business plans as tools for business initiative and development, and resource and opportunity sources for entrepreneurship are developed.
- Business Ethics and Sustainability (3 Credits)
This study unit seeks to improve the understanding of business ethics and sustainability and their effects on business operation -especially in educational organizations and educational processes. This involves the fact of learning to manage both tangible and intangible assets not only to pursue -from all organizational areas- the compulsory achievement of economic benefits supporting company’s survival, but also objectives on the achievement of social and environmental friendliness.
- Research Seminar (3 Credits)
The purpose of this study unit is to develop research competencies of master’s degree students, and provide tools and strategies aimed at promoting applied research initiatives and processes to transfer and apply theoretical developments on research, virtual related matters, e-learning, management, and education. Its purpose is to solve problems and difficulties faced when developing activities on distance education management and related matters.
- Final Major Project (4 Credits)
This study unit is the basis for and supports the final major project in order to ensure a constant flow of knowledge and experiences in two ways: Knowledge, experiences, and difficulties of academic institutions are provided to the academic process; and the academic process provides academic institutions with distance education programs and projects, theoretical developments, knowledge developments, and alternative solutions to address difficulties and problems.
Elective Study Units (9 Credits)
The elective study units are focused on providing a specificity context to the Master’s Degree in accordance with the interests of professionals and/or the needs of the company or business sector which the future master will perform in. This set of study units is comprised by three study units (three (3) credits each one, that is, nine (9) credits).
The elective study units are structured around topics of current interest. They can be changed in order to respond to needs and expectations of students, needs of organizations, and the natural evolution and change of disciplines.
Two emphases are offered in the Master’s Degree in Distance Education Management: Design of Virtual Environments and Research Exploration. The first one seeks to deepen aspects related to the design of virtual environments under a practical perspective and a technological approach. The second one addresses matters associated with e-learning research. In addition, students can choose the elective study units from the portfolio offered by other master’s degree programs in order to meet their interests and needs.
NOTE 1: The opening of electives study units is subject to a minimum number of students.
Note: Students have to be able to understand learning material and readings available in languages other than Spanish as they may be used to address and complement the activities carried out during the academic process.
